Rar has definitely worse LZ than 7-Zip, but better than Deflate of ZIP, mainly because of larger dictionary IMHO. The same with ACE's LZ. AFAIR LZX from .cab is slightly better and has larger dictionary. Best "plain" LZ's today are the ones from Uharc and 7-Zip AFAIK.

it was developed back in 1995 and was best lz algorithm at the moment. later, he smartly added ppmd, MM and important filters, so rar still rather competitive despite its the oldest algorithm remained in major compressors

Btw, the most obscure rar feature is so called RAR VM.
Do you know that since 2.9 rar includes a virtual machine
for backward-compatible filter implementation and such?

lot people still use it
and we may thanks to mikosoft fot their "send to compressed folder"
this cause many people not understand the what is ARCHIVE
and what the difference betwen zip and folder
